Unfortunately, some car accidents are unavoidable. If worst comes to worst, here are some tips on what to do if you do end up in one.
Prevention is better than cure
Safe driving will of course always help! Make sure you’re always aware of your surroundings and keep an eye ahead to anticipate any reckless driving from others. Always be alert.
Don’t use your phone
Using a phone is highly distracting while driving. Leave the call or text message until you have arrived at your destination – it’s better to be safe than sorry.
Check on yourself first
If you do end up in an accident, you need to make sure you’re OK before you go to help others. Don’t exit your car straight away in case other cars are still moving around you and navigating the accident. If you're seriously injured, stay where you are until help arrives.
It’s time to help
If you’re alright and any danger has subsided, go check the occupants of the other vehicle. If they’re badly hurt, don’t try and move them as they may have serious injuries – call the ambulance.
Use your hazard lights
Hazard lights are there for a reason - turn them on so that others are aware there’s an accident ahead.
Check for witnesses
Even if the accident is minor, look for a witness and get their contact details. Their testimony could help fast track your insurance claim processing.
Call the police
Notify the police after any accident, not matter how large or small – even if the other driver tries to tell you not to. This will help when you go to file a claim!
Collect as much information as you can
It’s very important to get the details of the other driver. This includes their car license plate number, name, address, phone number and insurance company.
Take care of yourself after the crash
Being in an accident can be a shock, so make sure you look after yourself after the fact. Delayed shock reactions are normal. Consider asking someone you know to help get you home and spend time with you afterwards.
Call the towing company
Your car may need to be towed if it’s in bad shape. Check if your car manufacturer or insurance company has towing as part of your roadside assistance cover.
Make a claim as soon as possible
It’s important to do this at the earliest possible time. If you’re a customer with Tower, you can make a claim online.
If you don’t currently have car insurance in place, now is a good time to buy some just in case any accidents occur. It’s easy to get a quote online today!
